James A. Lester
Special education attorney, advocate and consultant serving Michigan parents for over a decade.
Talk To An Expert
I've been practicing special education law for over a decade. I also have a child with disabilities (autism) who receives special education services. I know the system and how it works.
I've helped hundreds of families throughout Michigan with all kinds of special education related matters, from answering simple questions to solving complex problems.
There's a good chance I've helped other families with the same questions, concerns or problems that you have. I would be happy to help you too. In my experience, a consultation is often all it takes.
I provide two types of consultation service for parents who want information and advice, but who aren't looking for full legal representation at this time.
Both types of consultation are conveniently performed by phone conference.
Two Options For Phone Consultations
Option 1: Ask The Attorney
This type of consultation is appropriate for questions such as "What is an IEP and why is it important?" or "I keep asking the school to evaluate my child for special education but they never do it - what can I do?".
Option 2: Full Case Review
This is a more traditional full review and analysis of your case. It is appropriate for more complex situations that give rise to multiple questions or concerns, require complex analysis or problem-solving, or for situations requiring a review of documents. This consultation typically involves in-depth discussion of options and strategies for solving the problem and recommendations on how to proceed.
Benefits Of A Phone Consultation
The special education system is complicated. Even the schools struggle to understand some of the finer points. If you are confused about something you are certainly not alone. If you think there is a problem with your child’s special education program or IEP, you could very well be right.
But you have enough on your plate taking care of your child. You shouldn’t also have to bear the burden of trying to figure out the special education system on your own. Your time and energy are valuable and in limited supply.
A phone conference can be a shortcut to understanding and solutions. It can save you many hours of time, and loads of frustration and stress. And it can save you from the consequences of making a mistake, or delays in solving a problem because you don’t know what to do.
Finally, remember that it’s easier to avoid a problem or solve it early while it is small than waiting until it grows into a huge crisis. A consultation at the first sign of a problem can result in a quick, easy and inexpensive solution. That benefits your child, and everyone else too.

Advantages of a consultation:
Your child is important. Their education, safety, and well-being are important. If you think there is a problem at school, or you are confused about the special education system, talk to an expert.
Not For Emergencies
Under normal circumstances, you should allow for 3-7 business days between the time you submit the request form below and the completion of the consultation. Under some circumstances, the delay may be longer. For that reason, this service is NOT appropriate for emergency situations. If you are dealing with an emergency and need immediate help, DO NOT request this service.
